The Best Recommendation Is Sometimes "Don't Go."

The Best Recommendation Is Sometimes "Don't Go."

Local Knowledge Creates Better Holidays

Why the best recommendations are not always the obvious ones.

A personal story from owner Jens Mathiasen "Before arriving in Crete, I had already found the perfect beach.

It looked exactly like the kind of hidden place every traveller hopes to discover. Crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs and far away from the crowded tourist beaches. My plan was simple: rent a scooter with my daughter Ella and spend the afternoon exploring.

When I mentioned the idea at the hotel reception, I expected directions.

Instead, the receptionist smiled and said:

"I wouldn't recommend that."

She explained that the last part of the journey was on a rough gravel road. Riding two-up on a scooter, with little experience, in the summer heat, simply wasn't worth the risk. During the years several people had same idea before and came back with injuries from a crash even at low speed.

Instead, she suggested a different route, an easier ride into town and another beautiful beach that was much safer to reach by scooter.

We followed her advice.

She was absolutely right.

That recommendation didn't just save us from what could have been an uncomfortable or even dangerous experience. It made our holiday better. And by the way - later the week - we decided to rent a car and drive further and visit the beach at Elafonissi - what a beach !

She didn't sell us anything.

She protected our holiday.

And because of that, we trusted every recommendation she made afterwards.

This is where great hospitality begins.

Local partnerships create local knowledge.

Many hotels work with scooter rentals, diving centres, hiking guides, wineries, golf clubs and local restaurants.

But the real value isn't simply handing guests a brochure.

It's building relationships that allow hotel staff to genuinely understand the experiences they recommend.

Which beach is best for families?

Which roads should inexperienced scooter riders avoid?

Which hiking trails become dangerous after heavy rain?

Which local restaurant is worth the extra ten-minute drive?

These recommendations create confidence.

Guests feel looked after.

Local partners receive visitors who are better informed and more likely to enjoy the experience.

Everyone benefits.

Hospitality is about guidance, not just information.

The best hotels don't simply provide accommodation.

They help guests make better decisions.

Sometimes the most valuable recommendation isn't telling a guest where to go.

It's knowing where not to go.

At We Help Hotels, we believe strong local partnerships are one of the most overlooked opportunities in hospitality. When hotels and local businesses actively share knowledge—not just brochures—they create better experiences, stronger trust and lasting memories for every guest. Check this service.
